With Sun Gardens Dubrovnik’s enviable location, perched above the sparkling blue sea, with sweeping views out to the Elaphite Islands, and only a twenty-minute drive or boat ride from Byron’s “Pearl of the Adriatic”, there is plenty to grab guests’ attention over the course of a stay.

Amidst the decadent distractions of stylish rooms, tennis courts, small beaches, a Kids’ Club, an array of swimming pools, guided tours of Dubrovnik Old Town and exceptional fresh seafood at Cilantro, guests must also clear ample time to enjoy one of the finest spas in Croatia.

The Spa at Sun Gardens Dubrovnik is expansive and contemporary, with more than ten treatment rooms and couple’s suites. It’s a signature venue for OCCO – a brand inspired by the unspoiled beauty of the Dalmatian Coast – which is apt for a property boasting Sun Gardens’ desirable postcode. For those looking to take home a souvenir of Croatia’s unique character while avoiding the scrum of shops and markets in the Old Town and spread across the city walls, OCCO products are available to buy from the spa after a treatment has been enjoyed and come highly recommended.

Other, more renowned, international products are also utilised in the extensive range of treatments available. Combine this with the range of talented male and female therapists, administering soothing therapies for body and soul, plus the enticing indoor pool, sauna, steam room and juice bar, and it’s no surprise to learn that the spa has been recognised with several prestigious awards. This heady combination attracts numerous locals and outside tourists, in addition to resident guests, so it’s wise to plan your treatment regime well in advance of arrival.

In common with this churning conveyor belt of balance-seeking visitors, I am enticed by the extensive range of facials, massage and energising body treatments on offer, along with a lazy hour or more in the impressive thermal experience facilities.

In the summer months especially, the indoor facility is a welcome respite from the afternoon heat, with glass doors overlooking the Adriatic Sea to ensure an abundance of natural light pours in, while powerful air-conditioning negates the associated greenhouse effect. After cooling down, guests can rejuvenate in the traditional coal sauna, or choose from a salt sauna, hammam, aromatherapy steam room, tepidarium and Thalassotherapy spa pool. There is also a tempting 18-metre-long lagoon pool for those needing to swim a few lengths and mitigate the effects of an indulgent lunch.

The incredible sea views make it a perfect setting in which to wind down, either pre- or post-treatment, so I elect to do both! After twenty minutes of poolside contemplation, it’s time to move on to the nitty gritty of the treatment itself. I’m destined to enjoy a couple’s Swedish Massage with my husband, and we’re whisked away by our therapists to one of the luxurious couple’s suites.

Each massage is tailored to the client’s individual requirements and preferences. As I lie on the treatment couch, my therapist’s well-trained eyes seek out problem areas before the massage has even begun, correctly diagnosing overly hunched shoulders and a weak lower back. He sets to work ironing out my knots and tension spots, before moving on to the rest of my body with expert strokes. Beside me, on a separate treatment couch, my husband is receiving similar treatment. The fifty-minute massage is well-coordinated so we that we, reluctantly, are finished at the same time.

We are then served a delicious platter of fresh fruit and left to relax in private for half an hour. Once sufficiently energised to move, it’s time to don our robes and flip flops for a muscle soothing session in the steam room and sauna. To cool down after this, we enjoy a dip in the calming waters of the lagoon pool, which boasts a waterfall and underwater vitality jet loungers. Next to the pool is a fresh juice bar serving delicious and nutritious drinks, where guests can recline on the many indoor or outdoor loungers.

We opt to end our spa experience by relaxing outside on the sun terrace, where we can further unwind in the warming morning sun, gazing contentedly out to the sparkling waters of the Adriatic. Bliss!
