A Design Hotel Combining Concrete and Chandeliers

Privileged guests can now admire the city’s natural wonders — including Table Mountain and the V&A Waterfront — from a new lofty perspective. Born from the raw industrial space of the original historic grain silo, an exciting new African Art museum and boutique hotel have been ambitiously created. With The Silo Hotel already receiving its first award – the We Are Africa Design Africa Award 2017 – the future certainly looks inspired for this re-developed city landmark, and we imagine that a trail of art and hotel aficionados will be heading south to explore this new design hotel gem in ‘The Mother City’.

South African History, Art And Design Combined

Cleverly re-purposed, construction of the original grain silo building began in 1921 and was completed in 1924. Grain would arrive from the smaller, inland country silos by train and was weighed and sorted in the taller grain elevator, before being moved into the forty-two storage bins and shipped off to Europe. The re-developed building incorporates eighty-two, pillowed-glass, windows into the facade of the grain elevator, with a further twenty-two around the top of the storage bins. London’s Heatherwick Studio was responsible for the striking exterior architecture of the entire building — as well as the interior of Zeitz MOCAA (Museum of Contemporary Art Africa), the extraordinary contemporary art museum below The Silo Hotel.

From Industrial Roots To A Design Hotel

Towering above the V&A Waterfront, the luxurious Silo Hotel occupies the top six floors above the new Zeitz MOCAA — creating a glowing new beacon for Cape Town’s attractive skyline. Boasting an innovative and bold exterior design, coupled with the typically bright and eclectic interiors of Liz Biden, the building’s once redundant shell has a shiny new appeal. From the comfort of the vibrant and plush furnishings, guests can gaze out from one of the striking eight-two pillowed glass windows, or alternatively swim in the heated rooftop pool, to appreciate a new level of Design Hotel and luxury in the very heart of the city.

Stylish Hotel Interiors

Quite apart from the remarkable pillowed glass windows (standing 5.5 metres high), the hotel has twenty-eight rooms and suites (seven stunning room categories), plus a spectacular one-bedroom Penthouse. Each room has been individually designed and decorated in the signature style of Liz Biden, resulting in colourful and eclectic spaces that juxtapose the industrial architecture. Promoting local craftsmanship, most of the furniture was handmade in Cape Town by Moorgas & Sons, which adds to the authenticity and ‘sense of place’ for this Design Hotel. Each square foot of the interior design reflects the attractive flavour and flamboyance of South Africa.
